Cruisers
Austro-Hungarian "Ersatz Zenta" Type
- Yacht Cruisers -

On special request of the heir to the throne, archduke Franz Ferdinand, one of the trio was to be designed as a 'yacht cruiser' allowing accommodation of his person and his imperial suite.
Most probably this came from his wish to compete with his imperial opponent, Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany, who used to impress his Austrian guest aboard his imperial yacht Hohenzollern (III). As the stressed A-H naval budget did not allow the construction of a specific imperial yacht, Franz Ferdinand fell in love with the idea of a hybrid ship.
In the above mentioned prize winning competition Fiala's design IIb turned out to be the winner .
But the 'yacht cruiser' idea was not followed further as the heir to the throne had been assassinated at Sarajevo, what crime triggered WWI. It can be speculated, anyway, that such type of 'ink ark' would have given the A.-H. cruiser flotilla a suitable command ship with enough place to house a sufficient staff.
