In 1905 the German Imperial Navy started to build a further batch of protected cruisers, the Nürnberg, Stuttgart, Stettin and Königsberg.

Nürnberg - 1906: laid down at Kaiserliche Werft, Kiel, as replacement of cruiser Blitz; launched on 29 Aug 1906-08-29: launched; 1908: commissioned;  After trails and a training period she was sent to East Asia to relief the cruiser Arcona. In Juli 1914 she was relieved by the cruiser Leipzig and joined the cruiser task force of Vice-Admiral Graf Spee at Ponape (Micronesia). She took part at the Battle of Coronel on 1st November 1914 and was sunk at the Battle of Falkland (December 8th 1914) by the Britisch armoured cruiser Kent. Only 9 members of the crew survived.
Stettin - laid down 1906 at AG Vulcan, Stettin; launched 1907-03-07; 1920: ceded to Great Britain and scrapped.
Stuttgart - 1905: laid down at Kaiserliche Werft, Danzig; 1906-09-22: launched; 1908-02-01: commissioned and used for gunnery practise; 1914 allocated to the 4th Reconnaissance Group ("IV. Aufklärungsgruppe") with Hamburg, München and Frauenlob; took part at the Battle of Jutland; 1916-1918: converted to a seaplane tender at Kaiserliche Werft, Wilhelmshaven; 1919-11-05: decommissioned; 1920: ceded to Great Britain
Königsberg - laid down early 1905 at Kaiserliche Werft, Kiel; 1905-12-12: launched with a slightly reduced displacement; fleet duty until 1914; sent to East Africa to protect to German colonies; damaged by British warships and scuttled in the Rufiji delta on 1915-07-11.
