| The four ships of the Mogami class (Mogami, Suzuya, Mikuma and Kumano) were built under the conditions of the Washington Treaty. They were classified as class B cruiser (Light Cruiser). After their completion they were reconstructed and reclassified as class A cruiser (Heavy Cruiser). | ||||

| Mikuma - Laid down at Mitsubishi Nagasaki on December 24th 1931. Commissioned on August 29th 1935. Sunk at Midway by US planes on June 5th/6th 1942. | |
| Kumano - Laid down at Kawasaki Kobe on April 5th 1934. Commissioned on Oct. 31st 1937. Beached after being hit by 9 torpedoes; finally destroyed by US planes. |
