The
term „cruiser“ includes a remarkable variety of ship types of
different basic concepts. However, they are treated rather superficially
by naval literature. Common interests are much more focusing on
battleships as the most prestigious naval arm, the ultimate power of past
naval strength, the symbol of dominating the high seas. Even more
regrettable is the neglect of the small navies’ cruisers like those of
the A-H Navy. Almost no information on them can be found in naval
literature.
Among large sized Austro-Hungarian steam-powered warships, cruisers had
the most varied and exciting tasks and fates
During peace time they participated in the annual training exercises in
the Adriatic, taking on their assigned tactical role of leading torpedo
boats into battle. In addition, they constituted the backbone of
Austro-Hungarian naval representation overseas. Thus, numerous A-H sailors
learned to know the world, especially East Asia. In those days,
practically the one and only chance for commoners to gain experience
abroad and to develop their personalities.
